A complete step-by-step DIY credit dispute & identity theft remediation system built on federal law. Know your rights. Use them.
Your most powerful tool. Bureaus must BLOCK fraudulent accounts within 4 business days of receiving your identity theft dispute — not 30 days.
If a bureau cannot verify information, they must delete it. You can demand exact method of verification — who, when, what documents.
Anyone reporting to bureaus must report accurately and consistently. Differing balances across bureaus on the same date = violation.
Entitles you to $100–$1,000 per violation plus attorney fees for willful noncompliance. Cite it in every dispute letter.
Collectors must cease all collection activity until they validate the debt in writing. Always dispute in writing — never by phone alone.

AnnualCreditReport.com — pull all three on the same day
Go to AnnualCreditReport.com — the only federally authorized free site. Pull all three reports on the same day. Same-day pulls let you compare bureaus and identify Metro 2 violations under FCRA § 623(a)(1).
Also create free accounts with each bureau's app to monitor deletions in near real time: Experian app, myEquifax, and TransUnion app.
DO NOT use Credit Karma or third-party platforms as your primary source — these strip out account detail.

Bureaus use your old addresses, name variations, and stale employers to "verify" accounts. Remove that data first — then dispute. The order matters.

Log everything: agent name, agent ID, confirmation number, date and time for each call.
Wait 2–3 business days after calls before filing written disputes.

Upload all three credit report PDFs to Claude.ai or ChatGPT in a single conversation. Use this prompt:
"I am uploading my credit reports from all three bureaus, pulled on the same date. Please analyze them and identify: (1) All negative accounts including collections, charge-offs, and late payments; (2) Any accounts that appear fraudulent or unverifiable; (3) Metro 2 violations where the same account shows different balances, dates, or statuses across bureaus; (4) A prioritized list of which accounts to dispute first based on score impact and strength of legal violation. For each account, cite the specific FCRA or FDCPA provision that applies."
Save the AI analysis — this is your dispute roadmap. Build a master list: account name, original creditor, amount, which bureaus, violation cited.
IdentityTheft.gov — triggers the § 605B 4-day block
Go to IdentityTheft.gov. This is the federal document that triggers FCRA § 605B. You only need ONE report — list every fraudulent account on the same report. Download and save your FTC Identity Theft Report PDF and record your report number.

Notarized declaration of fraud — include in every filing
The Sworn Declaration of Fraud is a notarized legal document sworn under penalty of perjury. Include it in every filing alongside your FTC report. DO NOT SIGN until in front of the notary.

consumerfinance.gov — bureaus first, then collectors
The CFPB complaint portal is your highest-leverage tool. Companies have 15 days to respond and the complaint enters their permanent federal record.
File against Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion before filing against any collector. A bureau complaint forces the bureau to investigate AND notify every furnisher — hitting the same target from two directions.
Do not put your SSN, name, or account numbers in the narrative box — the CFPB collects that separately.
One letter per bureau, one per collector — never generic
Generate one letter per bureau and one per collector. Each letter must cite the specific violations on that specific file. After every letter is generated, run the Tightening Prompt twice:
"Make this tighter. Remove every loophole. Do not give them any task other than deletion — no requests to investigate, verify, or validate, because those give them a reason to keep the account on my report while they stall. Every deadline should be the shortest amount of time allowed by law. Cite the specific statute for every demand. Add language stating no opportunity to cure, no extensions, and no partial compliance will be accepted."

USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt — always
Each envelope contains: signed dispute letter, notarized affidavit, photo ID copy, proof of address copy, FTC Identity Theft Report copy.

Most people stop at the big three. That leaves the back door open. Secondary agencies feed data to landlords, banks, employers, utilities, and insurers.
Cut off the data flow identity thieves depend on
7-year alert — creditors must contact you before opening accounts
Contact ONE bureau — federal law requires them to notify the other two within 3 business days. An Extended Fraud Alert lasts 7 years and also removes you from pre-screened offer lists for 5 years automatically.
Follow up after a week to confirm all three bureaus show the alert.
Block all new credit applications — all bureaus, primary and secondary
A security freeze blocks access to your credit file entirely. All primary bureaus are free. Freezes do NOT affect your existing accounts, your credit score, or current credit cards — they only block NEW applications.
Freeze: Experian, Equifax, TransUnion, LexisNexis, Innovis, ChexSystems, NCTUE.
Store your freeze PINs somewhere secure and retrievable — you need them to temporarily lift a freeze when applying for legitimate credit.
Track the 15-day CFPB window and 4-day § 605B clock
If they delete — log it, pull a fresh report, and watch for reinsertion (silent reinsertion violates § 611(a)(5)(B) and is a new claim).
If they say "Verified" without deleting — file a new CFPB complaint, demand method of verification under § 611(a)(7), and file with your state Attorney General.
If they don't respond in 15 days — file a new CFPB complaint documenting non-response. Non-response is itself evidence of noncompliance.
A denial is not a dead end — it is a documented failure to comply and strengthens your position on the second filing.
Wait until all accounts deleted and scores stable above 700
Every application is a hard inquiry costing 5–10 points. Don't give back what you just fought for.
Wait until all of these are true:
Applying at 640 gets you a $500 secured card. Applying at 720 gets you real terms. The wait is worth real money.
